AACTivists join world protests against the brutal Chinese fur industry, and the Canadian seal hunt
with Launceston protest on March 14

Against Animal Cruelty Tasmania has joined world wide protests against the horrific cruelty of the Chinese fur industry, and the brutal seal hunt in Canada, following the recent condemnation of both “industries” by Sir Paul and Lady Heather McCartney. Anti-fur Campaign Co-ordinator Liz Hardy said:

“As part of this world wide protest, AACT will be holding a demonstration outside the Silver Fox, in Brisbane Street, Launceston (just up from the Princess Theatre), from 12 noon tomorrow (March 14).

“Animal advocacy organizations world wide have co-ordinated this campaign to stop the shocking practices of fur farming in China, where all types of fur-bearing animals, including cats and dogs, are routinely skinned alive.

“Undercover investigators have filmed animals with hearts still beating minutes after their skins have been removed. It is estimated that a high percentage of baby harp seals in Canada are also skinned alive”.

China provides about 80% of the world’s fur trade, and animal advocates have been sickened and horrified by images taken by undercover investigators from a number of countries. There are no animal welfare safeguards in China, and the conditions under which animals are farmed are atrocious. No-one effectively monitors the conduct of the baby seal slaughter in Canada to ensure any humane standards are maintained. Italy is among a few countries countries which have recently banned the import of seal fur products, but there are no such bans on Chinese fur anywhere in the world. Australia claims to have banned the import of dog and cat fur, but no information is available on how this ban is implemented or monitored.

“There is nothing beautiful about wearing the skins of dead animals”, continued Ms Hardy, “Particularly when we know the enormous suffering these animals endure in their pitifully short lives.

“The world needs to know the truth about these atrocities”, she concluded.
