THE BLOODY
TRUTH BEHIND FUR
Protest at Launceston fur shop
Members of Against
Animal Cruelty Tasmania will continue their campaign to highlight the
terrible cruelty of the fur trade by holding a protest outside of The
Silver Fox boutique on Saturday.
The protestors will be joined
by their giant rabbit mascot, BiBi, to draw the public’s attention
to the horrific way that animals are raised and slaughtered for the fur
industry. According to Yvette Watt, AACT spokesperson:
Fur has made a terrible comeback
in fashion. Not only has there been a global resurgence of fur coats,
but fur also turns up in many stores in Tasmania as trim on coats, gloves,
hats, scarves and shoes. Most of this fur now comes from China, where
the animals are raised, handled and slaughtered under the most horrifically
cruel circumstances imaginable. Rabbits are the most common animals
used, but cats and dogs are commonly slaughtered and skinned for their
fur too. China has no truth in labeling laws, so this dog and cat fur
is given another name and is sold in many countries including Australia.
The activists are targeting
The Silver Fox boutique, as it is the only store in Tasmania that specialises
in fur (see www.thesilverfox.com.au).
Undercover investigators
from international groups such as Animals Asia have filmed conditions
on fur farms and in markets in China, and even those hardened by bitter
experience were sickened by what they saw, including animals suffocating
from being crammed into tiny cages, transported hundreds of miles to
markets and dropped from high trucks smashing bones. Worst of all animals
were slaughtered in full view of each other and were routinely skinned
alive.
The fur industry is renowned
worldwide for its cruelty. China is without a doubt the worst offender,
with a totally unregulated industry and absolutely no animal welfare
laws to protect the animals. However even in Europe fur farms are nothing
short of factory farms for animals such as foxes and mink, and these
animals are killed as cheaply as possible, often by electrocution or
even garroting. The only way to stop this cruelty is for vain women
to stop wearing the skins of these beautiful animals.” concluded
Ms Watt.
When: 11.00am – 12.00 noon Saturday 23rd September
Where: Outside The Silver Fox boutique, 51 Brisbane Street Launceston.
