Cruelty for
Sale: The Silver Fox Boutique Still Selling Fur
Against Animal Cruelty Tasmania
(AACT) will be staging an Anti – Fur protest outside of the Silver
Fox Boutique in Launceston on Saturday the 3rd of May from 11am until
12 noon. The protest is aimed at highlighting the suffering of animals
used in the fur industry and to encourage the owners of the Silver Fox
Boutique to stop selling fur.
An Against Animal Cruelty
Tasmania spokesperson observed
“Every year, over
50 million animals are killed for their fur. Worldwide, more than 30
million animals are bred in intensive fur farms and an additional 20
million trapped and killed to support the fur trade”.
Animals bred on fur farms are
kept in barren, cramped wire cages, with usually three or more animals
per cage. Mink in particular suffer the most as they are not only crammed
into cages, but also forced to endure icy winds and cold temperatures
in order to promote faster growth of their fur.
“Animals in fur farms
endure incredible suffering throughout their short lives. They are forced
to live in cramped conditions until they are prematurely killed. To
ensure that the animal’s coats are not damaged, they are usually
killed by gassing, electrocution or by having their necks broken.”
Commented AACT
Fur – bearing animals
in the wild are trapped using “steel jaw traps”. These traps
have steel jaws which snap shut when pressure is placed on the footplate.
The jaws bite into the flesh of the trapped animal, tearing ligaments
and shattering bones. Animals caught in these traps can spend days dying
a slow agonising death. Many non - saleable animals such as dogs, cats,
owls and birds are caught in the traps.
“With the wide range
of faux fur available, it is outrageous that real fur is still being
sold. It takes 30-70 mink and 10-20 foxes to make a coat. Most people
are unaware that Lapin is rabbit fur, but sometimes cat fur is used
instead. One Lapin coat means the death of 30-40 rabbits, rabbits that
are often skinned alive in countries like China.
Even though we have sent the owner information about the atrocities
involved in the fur industry, she still continues to sell fur clothing.
Fur belongs on animals, not people,” said AACT
