Clarence City Council becomes second Tasmanian Council to

call for end to battery hen farming

Against Animal Cruelty Tasmania (AACT) and the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) are today celebrating the Clarence City Council’s decision, passed at last night’s Meeting to write to all of its caterers asking that they no longer use battery hen eggs. The motion, moved by Alderman Sharyn von Bertouch ensures that Clarence City Council has quickly become the second Tasmanian Council to say no to the battery hen industry.

Alderman Sharon Von Bertouch stating:

The Clarence City Council has reflected the communities concern at the battery hen industry in last night strongly supporting a motion that we write to all caterers calling for them to no longer use battery hen eggs at Council functions. We are hopeful that this will be yet another nail in the coffin of the battery hen industry and a move towards a kinder, more caring community.

Benedict Bartl, Battery Hen co-ordinator for AACT stating:

The move against battery hen farming is gathering pace. Two of Tasmania’s largest Councils have now sent a message loud and clear to the State Government demanding that community sentiment be reflected in an end to battery hen farming.

RSPCA CEO Greg Tredinnick stating:

The RSPCA is extremely pleased that after many years of calling for an end to the battery hen industry, councils are taking the lead on this very important animal welfare reform. We congratulate Clarence City Council on its decision and call on the other Tasmanian councils to follow suit.
