Launceston
City Council becomes third Tasmanian Council to
call for end
to battery hen farming
Against Animal Cruelty Tasmania (AACT) and the Royal Society for the Prevention
of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) are today celebrating the Launceston City
Council’s decision, passed at yesterday’s meeting to write
to all of their caterers asking that they only use Tasmanian Free Range
eggs. The motion, moved by Alderman Jeremy Ball and seconded by Deputy
Mayor Rosemary Armitage sees Launceston City Council join with Hobart
City Council and Clarence City Council in saying no to the battery hen
industry.
Benedict Bartl, Battery Hen
co-ordinator for AACT stating:
The move against battery
hen farming is gathering pace. Three of Tasmania’s largest councils
have now sent a message loud and clear to the State Government demanding
that community sentiment be reflected in an end to battery hen farming.
The motion, to be moved by
Aldermen Jeremy Ball will, if successful, see Launceston City Council
become the third Tasmanian council calling for a more humane policy after
Hobart City Council and Clarence City Council passed similar motions earlier
this year.
RSPCA CEO Greg Tredinnick stating:
The RSPCA is extremely pleased
that after many years of calling for an end to the battery hen industry,
local government is taking the lead on this very important animal welfare
reform. We congratulate Launceston City Council on its decision and
call on the other Tasmanian councils to follow suit.
