An enormous 23,012 signatories to petition calling for end to

battery hen farming

A petition with more than 23,012 signatories will today be presented to Nick McKim MHA at 12:30p.m. outside Parliament House, Hobart. The petition calls for an immediate end to battery hen farming in Tasmania and was collected primarily by Mr Benedict Bartl with the assistance of Against Animal Cruelty Tasmania (AACT) members and supporters.

Benedict Bartl, Battery Hen co-ordinator for AACT stating:

In April 2007, I entered into a battery hen farm and was witness to such severe animal welfare abuses that I felt compelled to expose the lives of battery hens to the Tasmanian public. With a Government refusing to act on the images we were able to bring to the public’s attention, I have taken it upon myself with the support of Against Animal Cruelty Tasmania (AACT) to door-knock a couple of streets every weekend for the last year, with a petition calling for an end to battery hen farming. Of the many tens of thousands of houses across Tasmania that I door-knocked on, only a handful supported this barbaric industry. The overwhelming majority of householders I have visited are demanding an immediate end to this barbaric industry.

Benedict Bartl, Battery Hen co-ordinator for AACT stating:

In 2002, in discussing the battery hen issue David Llewellyn said that he had to put his words into deeds. Well, after 20 years of being a politician, that time has well and truly come and a line must be drawn in the sand. Is this Government going to put the interests of a few ahead of the will of the majority or are they going to side with the overwhelming majority who are demanding an immediate end to this cruel and inhumane industry?
