Protestors
Greet Stardust Circus!
14th June 2006
Up to 50 members
and supporters of Against Animal Cruelty Tasmania (AACT) will today protest
against the arrival of Stardust Circus in Hobart. The protest will be
held between 5:30p.m. – 7:30p.m. outside the gates of the Derwent
Entertainment Centre, Glenorchy. Amongst the protestors will be circus
performers as well as a giant 5-metre banner that proclaims ‘Animal
Circuses: The Cruellest Show on Earth’.
The Circus Campaign Co-ordinator
for AACT, Benedict Bartl stating:
We want to send a clear message
to both the Glenorchy City Council and the Tasmanian Government that
the use of exotic animals in circus acts is archaic and unacceptable.
We are hopeful that they will follow the lead of the Australian Capital
Territory and over 35 local councils from around Australia by banning
circuses with exotic animals.
Proudly advertising itself
as ‘the largest traditional animal circus still travelling in
Australia’, Stardust Circus has brought 2 elephants, 5 lions,
several monkeys and a number of horses to perform at a just finished
season in Launceston and in Hobart starting tonight. AACT will be leafleting
the surrounding suburbs as well as those attending the performance.
Benedict Bartl concluding:
The most successful circuses
in the world today are those that rely on the magic and acrobatics of
humans. It is appalling that we continue to force animals to perform
unnatural and degrading acts for a few cheap laughs.
