AACT
calls for Animal Circus Ban!
With a freed elephant, monkey
and tiger in tow as well as a reformed lion tamer, Against Animal Cruelty
Tasmania (AACT) will tomorrow be protesting against the planned visit
of Stardust Circus. The protest will be taking place at 12:30p.m. outside
the Glenorchy City Council chambers at 374 Main Rd, Glenorchy and will
include the unveiling of a giant five-metre banner proclaiming ‘Animal
Circuses – The Cruellest Show on Earth’.
The Circus Campaign Co-ordinator
for AACT, Benedict Bartl stating:
It is abhorrent in this day
and age that circuses continue to countenance the use of animals in
circus acts. Animals belong in circuses like dancing bears belong at
Salamanca Markets.
Stardust Circus, which proclaims
to be ‘Australia’s best loved animal circus’ has 2 elephants,
5 lions and monkeys and will be holding shows at the Launceston Silverdome
and the Derwent Entertainment Centre over the coming fortnight. The protest
is taking place outside the Glenorchy City Council chambers in the hope
that pressure can be placed on the Council to reconsider their decision
to allow the circus to use their premises at the DEC.
Benedict Bartl concluding:
The Australian Capital Territory
and more than 35 councils around Australia have outlawed circuses with
exotic animals. The Glenorchy City Council and the Tasmanian Government
should move quickly to ensure that animals are not forced to engage
in unnatural acts for a few cheap laughs.
