Native Waterbirds Survey Dismissed as Open
Season is Declared
Animal and
conservation groups are shocked to learn that the Minister for Primary
Industries and Water has declared another open season on native waterbirds in
2009, before seeing a key scientific report.
The report, financed by the Australian Government, is based on aerial
survey work by a leading university professor and is yet to be completed.
Professor Richard
Kingsford of the University of New South Wales is currently finalising his
annual aerial waterbird survey. For the
first time, the survey covers a number of significant wetlands across Tasmania,
where previous surveys were restricted to eastern mainland States. The 2007 survey report shows that waterbird
numbers have plummeted by 82% over the past 25 years
“No decision should
have been made until Kingsford's aerial waterbird survey work is complete.”
announced Chris Simcox of Against Animal Cruelty Tasmania, “The Australian
Government has paid to have the survey done.
Taxpayers money is being wasted as the Minister blatantly ignores the
science by announcing a season early.
Llewellyn proudly claims that Tasmania has never missed a duck season,
showing his obvious contempt for the well-being of native waterbirds. Premier Bartlett should intervene immediately
and override the Minister's incompetent decision-making. Bartlett has the opportunity here to show
some true leadership by making a responsible decision for native ducks in Tasmania.”
