Flies In to Deliver Tasmanian Duck Rescue Training
2pm Saturday
16th February
Republic Bar, Hobart
** Media Opportunity **
Against Animal Cruelty Tasmania
(AACT), invites all interested people to take part in an afternoon of
duck rescue training in Hobart tomorrow. Experienced duck rescuers, including
Coalition Against Duck Shooting campaign director Laurie Levy, will deliver
an informative session to prepare participants for the impending 2008
duck killing season.
Laurie Levy has been a high
profile campaigner against duck shooting in Victoria for more than twenty
years. With Tasmania the only state to allow a season in 2008, Mr Levy
has generously offered AACT his assistance with their efforts to fend
for native ducks that are soon to face a barrage of gunfire.
Laurie Levy today said: "Because
of the failure of consecutive Tasmanian Governments to protect Australia's
native waterbirds, it becomes imperative for the public to step in and
do that job for them. The Tasmanian Government and DPIW Minister David
Llewellyn continue to act as the Field & Game's personal gamekeepers.
Our crack Victorian rescue team will again join forces with the Tasmanian
rescuers at Moulting Lagoon on the opening weekend of the shooting season,
8 March, and anyone wishing to join the Tasmanian team should go along
to the training day on Saturday."
“Every year we find public
opinion growing in support of an end to the shooting of native ducks in
Tasmania.” said Chris Simcox of Against Animal Cruelty Tasmania,
“With this there is an increase in the number of people who want
to actively do something to halt the annual assault on native waterbirds.
For people joining our rescue team, this training provides essential information
on the immediate care of native waterbirds that we find shot and abandoned
during the open season. We also teach vital aspects of personal safety
while on the wetlands. We are privileged to have someone of Laurie's experience
to assist our campaign help embattled native ducks who are otherwise denied
protection.”
Anyone who cares about
native ducks is encouraged to attend the training. Register your interest
by emailing nativeducks@yahoo.com.au or phoning 6224 6229. More information
about the campaign to end recreational duck shooting in Tasmania can be
found on the Against Animal Cruelty Tasmania website: www.aact.org.au.
Join us and get your feet wet to help ducks in danger!
The media are invited to attend
this training and presenters, including Laurie Levy, will be available
for interview.
