Brumby lets ducks down
Tasmanian animal welfare and
conservation groups have condemned Victorian Premier John Brumby’s
decision to allow for the 2009 duck shooting season to go ahead. The season
will run from the 21st of March thought to the 8th of May.
Peter Power from Wildlife Tasmania
said:
“The decision to allow for a season to go ahead in 2009, after it
had been banned in 2007 and 2008 is absolutely incomprehensible. There
is overwhelming support for duck shooting to be banned in Victoria, yet
the Brumby Government has chosen to give shooters the green light.”
The Department of Sustainability
and the Environment (DSE) advised that the season should not go ahead,
yet the government’s Hunting Advisory Committee disagreed.
“It is irresponsible
for the government to ignore scientific evidence and allow for the season
to go ahead when bird numbers are down by over 80% across eastern Australia.
Not to mention the low rainfall and fires experienced in Victoria of lat,”
said Against Animal Cruelty Tasmania Native Waterbird Campaign Coordinator
Chris Simcox.
“It is very difficult
to comprehend that after 2 years of not having a season, Victorian has
decided to go ahead with one this year. Western Australia, New South Wales
and Queensland have all banned duck shooting as they have recognized it
for the barbarically cruel and unnecessary practice that it is. It really
is incredible that Victoria did not decide to follow suite,” stated
Mr. Simcox..
