600+ DUCKS
SET TO MEET LLEWELLYN
Commencing
11 am in Franklin Square
With the help of Against Animal Cruelty Tasmania, more than 600 paper
ducks will arrive in Minister David Llewellyn's office today. AACT, as
the courier, will see the ducks receive safe passage direct to Mr Llewellyn's
door. The ducks are folded from letters addressed to the Minister and
signed by the many concerned citizens who want an end to duck shooting
in Tasmania.
“The Minister should
recognise that these ducks are carrying a message from the people that
they want an end to this unsustainable and barbaric practice.”
declared Chris Simcox of Against Animal Cruelty Tasmania, “The
majority of people are opposed to the unjust way that Mr Llewellyn regards
the native wildlife. In a recent Morgan Research poll in Victoria, 75
percent of those polled were in favour of a permanent ban on duck shooting.”
These paper ducks convey the
message that many thousands will be sentenced to death if the Minister
allows the 2008 duck season to proceed.
“Mr Llewellyn is reminded
that he is choosing to allow an inordinate number of native ducks to
die at a time when waterbirds are suffering at the hands of a 'record
drought'.” said Alistair Graham of the Tasmanian Conservation
Trust, “Many people have placed their signatures on these letters
to show they want an end to this atrocity. With just a month to go before
the season is due to open, we are making yet another plea to the Minister
to hear the collective voices and end duck shooting in Tasmania.”
