EARTH DAY:
A Delicate Balance

Against Animal Cruelty Tasmania (AACT) will be hosting an Earth Day lunch time Cruelty Free BBQ and Public Information Event in Franklin Square on Tuesday the 22nd of April. The event will run from 12 noon until 1.30pm.

Spokes person Jennifer Beer states:
‘Earth Day is an international event aimed at raising people’s awareness about how their individual choices impact on the environment. We will be focusing on the environmental impact that people’s diets have. Meat production and dairy farming are not only major sources of greenhouse gas emissions; they are also massive users and polluters of water.’

The Australian National Greenhouse Inventory identified agriculture as being responsible for almost 20% of the national greenhouse emissions in 2001. According to a new report published the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the livestock sector generates more greenhouse gas emissions than transport.

Ms Beer adds:
‘On average, Australians eat over 70 kilograms of meat per person per year. More than half a billion animals, mainly pigs, cows and chickens are raised for meat production in Australia each year. These animals are raised in conditions in which they are unable to exercise their most basic instincts. By changing to a plant based diet, people can help end these cruel intensive farming practices and also reduce their carbon footprint.’

AACT is also promoting the newly released controversial Australian documentary ‘A Delicate Balance – The Truth’. A Delicate Balance – The Truth, produced and directed by an upcoming Australian filmmaker, offers practical solutions to empower Australians concerned about their health to make life-saving changes through intelligent dietary choices. The 84-minute film makes no apologies for being provocative or alarming. The film is showing on Friday 25th and Saturday 26th of April at the State Cinema at 6.30pm.
