State Government
urged to follow Council lead and ban battery eggs from its premises!
Against Animal Cruelty Tasmania (AACT) who were witness to extraordinary
scenes at the Hobart City Council meeting last night, are calling on the
State Government to follow the example set by the Council and ban battery
hen eggs from all of its premises. Last night, a large majority of the
Hobart City Council voted in support of a motion by Alderman Phillip Cocker
calling for a Report to be written asking that all caterers supplying
products at Council events and functions not use battery eggs.
AACT Battery Hen Co-ordinator
Benedict Bartl stating:
David Llewellyn is on the
public record as stating that he would like to see an end to battery
hen farming. He can start by demanding that all Government premises
including public schools, public hospitals, prisons and Government Business
Enterprises including the Spirit of Tasmania and Aurora all make the
switch to free-range eggs.
AACT Battery Hen Co-ordinator
Benedict Bartl stating:
The Hobart City Council last
night lead the nation in pushing for a ban on the use of battery hen
eggs. Their motion calling for the State Government to ban battery hen
farming and for its caterers not to use battery eggs, follows on from
a motion only one month ago that the Taste of Tasmania preference free
range producers. It is a great shame that David Llewellyn cannot show
some leadership on this issue by demanding that only free-range eggs
be used in Government premises. The Australian Capital Territory has
already adopted a policy of only using non-caged eggs in all of its
premises so there is no reason why this State Government cannot follow
suit.
