AACT encouraged by State Government consideration of non-cage eggs purchasing policy

Against Animal Cruelty Tasmania (AACT) is encouraged by recent correspondence with the Minister for Primary Industries, David Llewellyn MP in which he confirms that the State Government is currently considering the adoption of a non-cage eggs purchasing policy for schools, hospitals and Government-Business Enterprises including the TT-Line.

According to AACT Battery Hen Co-ordinator Benedict Bartl:

We are encouraged by recent correspondence from David Llewellyn in which he confirms that the Government is considering the adoption of a non-cage egg purchasing policy for all Government agencies, including business enterprises. In support of David Llewellyn’s proposed purchasing policy we have written to all Cabinet Members urging them to support the adoption of this clean, green and ethical policy.

In a letter dated 30th April 2008 David Llewellyn MP writes: ‘[t]he issue of the Government and its business enterprises purchasing only non-cage eggs is currently under consideration. I am inclined to support such a move, and I will be discussing this with my colleagues’.

Benedict Bartl concluding:

Tasmania can be an Australian leader in the adoption of a non-cage eggs purchasing policy for Government agencies including our schools, hospitals and the TT-Line. We call on the Premier Paul Lennon, who is also the Patron of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals to support his Minister’s move of a non-cage eggs purchasing policy.
