Hobart City
Council to consider ‘free range’
Taste of Tasmania
Against Animal Cruelty Tasmania
(AACT) and the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals
(RSPCA) will today join with Hobart City Council Alderman Bill Harvey
in calling for future Taste of Tasmania Festivals to be ‘free range’.
The launch will take place at 2:00p.m. outside the Hobart Town Hall and
in attendance will be a chicken mascot and a 3-metre banner declaring
‘Battery Hen Farming is Cruel and Inhumane’.
Alderman Bill Harvey stating:
The Taste of Tasmania is
Australia’s premiere clean and green Wine and Food Festival. However,
if it is to maintain this edge it must continue to support ethically
responsible and environmentally friendly products. Preferencing stall-holders
who only use free range eggs will ensure that only the best products
are being sourced and will in turn enhance our brand.
Emma Haswell, Battery Hen spokesperson
for AACT stating:
The campaign to ban battery
hen farms is gathering momentum. Globally, the European Union will be
caged egg free by 2012 and Switzerland has been caged-egg free since
1992. In Australia, 80% of those surveyed want an end to battery hen
farms. Enough is enough. If our Government will not act, then it is
time for Councils to take a stand.
RSPCA CEO Dr Rick Butler stating:
The RSPCA has lobbied for
many years to have battery hen farming phased out. We encourage the
Hobart City Council to support this motion and call on other Councils
to follow suit.
